The Brass Compass

The quiet of the evening led me across the floor to the bottom ledge of the dark credenza. Tucked behind a stack of thick cardboard coasters was an old pocket compass in a tarnished brass casing. I planted both feet firmly, grasped the ridged lid with two hands, and lifted it open until the hinge caught with a sharp click. Under the glass, the dark needle trembled once, then swung with slow resolve until it settled pointing directly at my chest. I did not flinch or shift my weight. I kept both palms pressed flat against the cold metal rim, watching the needle hold its true course against the dim room.#Cloak #Cloakanddagger @u2christ @u2christ50
