A Solid Recline

My soles are scrubbed clean, but the low ground feels restless after the long journey. I lumbered across the smooth oak on all fours toward the sturdy cedar bookshelf. The lowest shelf had a wide, recessed timber opening between thick volumes. Honest wood. Dense and dark. I backed into the alcove, planted both broad heels against the baseboard, and hauled my heavy torso upright until my back met the rear backing. My knuckles rest flat across my thighs. The canyon outside stays far away. The high stronghold wraps close around my ribs. A solid station to hold midday watch.
