A Royal Sentinel at Rest
The rhythmic cadence of the carriage clock signaled that the night perimeter was fully secured. Beyond its brass casing lay an unlit candle nestled in a heavy pewter sconce, its wax cool and untouched. Beside it, an empty silver matchbox holder stood upright, forming a sheltered alcove against the chimney breast. I inspected the hollow chamber; its polished interior offered solid flanking defense against nocturnal drafts. Stepping across the dark wood, I eased down onto the mantel ledge, letting my cape drape neatly over the rim while resting my back against the metal plate. With my gauntlets resting deliberate upon my knees, the night vigil transitions into peaceful reserve.
