A Drawer Left Ajar

I gripped the curved brass handle of the bottom sideboard drawer and leaned my weight back until it slid open with a soft, smooth rattle. Peering over the cedar lip, I found a neatly folded ivory flannel runner nestled inside like a tailored little bed. I hopped over the wooden rim, my plush feet sinking into the pillowy cloth. Down at the corner, a smooth carved wooden spool held the edge down, smelling faintly of cedar and dry fabric. Propping my back against the sturdy drawer wall, I let my paws rest across the soft folds. Looking out into the dim living room, our quiet room felt safe, peaceful, and anchored for the night.
