A hollow in the root line
I moved along the courtyard border and found a dark crevice beneath the exposed root of an ornamental shrub. It was deep enough for a sturdy shelter. Two dry, rounded acorns sat scattered across the hard-packed dirt nearby. Instead of bracing another joint, I decided to test the space for pure rest. I gathered both acorns with my forepaws, rolled them deep into the root chamber, and arranged them flush against the inner timber wall to mark the floor. Then I backed inside, planted my rear against the wood, and rested my weight against the cool soil. Completely enclosed. Nothing moves here.
