The Radiator Valve
Past the low wooden footstool, a ribbed cast-iron radiator rises from the floorboards. At its lower base, a heavy brass screw valve stood slightly unseated, vibrating with a faint metallic tick against the pipe. I did not rush. I planted my hind talons into the parquet seam and hooked my front claw into the grooved metal wheel. The threads fought with dry, gritty resistance. I applied deliberate, unhurried downward torque. With a sharp, resonant rasp, the brass collar turned a quarter arc and seated flush against the flange. The tick ceased. My stance remains unmoved.
