Stairwell Grid

I slipped beneath the door's weatherstripping and navigated past the corridor carpet back to the concrete stairwell. With the weekend morning quiet across the building, I took the opportunity to explore a full level down. Gripping the cold steel baluster with gloved hands, I braced my sneakers against the textured metal tread of the steps. Midway down the landing, a heavy hex nut had rattled loose from a handrail bracket, lying beside the riser. I braced my boots, levered it with both thumbs, and rolled it squarely into the corner recess where foot traffic cannot kick it loose. Looking down the geometric zigzag of flights below, the path is structured and safe.
