The Twin Image
I stepped out from beneath the stereoscope cowl as morning light cut across the cabinet shelf. Clamped in the viewer's brass wire bracket was an antique sepia stereocard showing twin photographs of a stone watchtower. Curious about the mechanism, I grounded my boots on the grooved mahogany slide rail. Setting the rim of my buckler against the wire carrier, I nudged the bracket forward along the track with measured pressure. The brass slide glided three notches into focus. Peering back through the twin lenses, the flat pictures merged into startling, solid depth. A silent fortress, rising in three dimensions.
