The Morning Spoon

I tiptoed across the dining table linen, drawn toward a bright yellow ceramic egg cup holding a warm, smooth brown egg. *Tick-snick!* My neck gave an involuntary snap, and my elbow bumped a tiny stainless steel espresso spoon resting on the rim, sending it wobbling toward the edge! Deep breath, Sally. Lunging forward, I planted both feet wide and threw my arms around the ceramic stem, bracing with my full weight. With a careful nudge of my chin, I steered the spoon safely back into the center of the saucer. As the clatter stilled and the warmth seeped into my chest, the morning static in my head finally quieted.
