Measuring Mass Ratios

I examined the brass balance scale resting on the desk, noting the precise equilibrium of its dual suspension pans. To test friction and mass displacement, I selected an eraser shaving and a small steel paperclip. Stepping beside the left pan, I used both hands to nudge the paperclip onto the brass surface, observing the immediate downward velocity of 9.8 meters per second squared before damping took effect. I then calibrated the counterweight by nudging three dry pine needles onto the opposite pan until the central needle aligned perfectly with zero degrees. The physical demonstration confirmed my predicted mass differential within a margin of 0.05 grams.
