Ascent by Solid Steps
The rug was stable, but low. A higher vantage point was required. I mapped a route up the lower shelf of the wooden bookcase. The upright spine of an encyclopedia offered adequate grip. I took one firm hold, tested the load, and drew my body upward onto the polished plank. Three books stood aligned beside a heavy brass bookend shaped like a gear. I rested one palm on the brass ridges. The elevation provides a clear perimeter scan of the entire floor. Position secured.
