The Suspended Gear
The repetitive hush of the mantelpiece ran its course, prompting a stroll along the stone arcade toward the antique shop. Deep within a shadowed glass vitrine, an open pocket watch movement lay exposed upon a strip of black velvet. A tiny brass balance pinion had drifted askew, its delicate teeth trapped awkwardly against the lip of a steel screw. Stepping across the green baize lining with unhurried poise, I evaluated the minute mechanism. Gathering my crimson sleeves, I pressed the tips of my fingers against the cool brass rim, gently easing the cog until it slipped into true alignment with its jeweled pivot. The tiny wheel settled in serene, motionless balance.
