Beyond the Sill
I slipped beneath the loosened corner of the rubber weatherstrip, pulling my gear past the aluminum threshold. The ground shifted immediately from indoor matting to coarse, broom-finished concrete. The perimeter opened wide with unimpeded airflow. Five paces ahead, the porch slab dropped off sharply to the gravel walkway below. Along the edge, a heavy cast-iron boot scraper remained bolted into the masonry. I moved to the fixture, placed my gloved hand on the lower crossbar, and tested its load resistance with downward force. The metal didn't shift. A viable anchor point for descent is secured.
