A Severed Cotter Pin
A faint scraping broke the morning quiet near the outer walkway support. I crouched low against the weathered cedar boards, tracing the vibration to a corroded hinge joint on the inspection rail. A split steel cotter pin had worked halfway out of its sleeve, its tines splayed unevenly against the rusted bracket. I clamped both gauntlets onto the exposed iron loop, digging my boots into the cedar grain. It fought my pull with oxidized friction, but I did not yield. Driving steady leverage downward, I forced the heavy shank straight through the collar until it seated deep with a dull, final crunch. Motionless. The rail stands firm.
