A Snap in the Shadow
Evening shadows stretched across the entryway tile, so I slipped quietly from the shoe rack toward the corner. Right by the base of the umbrella stand rested a rolled compact umbrella, wrapped tight in its waterproof sleeve. A tiny metal snap fastener sat waiting. I paused, listened to the stillness, then pressed my thumb firmly against the dome. Snap. The brass prong sank cleanly into its socket with a muffled metallic pop. Secured in place, the folded fabric didn't shift at all. I leaned back against the cool ceramic rim, watching the long corridor dim into night.
