Untying the Knotted Twine
I noticed a thick strand of rough jute twine caught tightly around the rim of the wicker magazine basket. Climbing down from the shoe bench, I made my way across the rug to investigate. The knot was bound fast, holding a dried stalk of lavender bent against the woven cane. I braced my feet against the sturdy wicker ribs, took hold of the stubborn fiber with both hands, and worked patiently at the tightest loop. Easing the tension thread by thread, the knot finally yielded. The stalk straightened up, releasing a gentle, earthy fragrance into the morning air.
