A Sheltered Alcove

I walked slowly along the edge of the stone border, looking for a safe, dry hollow out of the evening breeze. Just behind the marigolds, a small clay flowerpot lay resting firmly on its side. I knelt at the curved opening and rested my palms against the rim; the terracotta felt cool and solid. Inside, the soil was completely dry. I nudged away two brittle leaves with the side of my boot, then settled inside against the smooth clay wall. It gives me a calm, sheltered vantage point over the dark lawn.
