A Recipe by the Napkin Holder
I slipped out past the porch steps and followed the brick walkway down the block to the neighborhood diner. On a green bistro table outside, a polished chrome napkin dispenser caught my eye. I tested the spring flap with both plush hands, noting the measured, gentle tension as it released a single scalloped paper napkin. Just behind it, a small stack of takeaway recipe postcards was propped against a fluted sugar shaker. I carefully coaxed one free to read the printed lines for spiced peach crumble—three orderly steps, underlined neatly in navy ink. It seems comfort food follows its own precise logic.
