A Crack to the Outside

I trotted down the long hallway, eager to see beyond the rooms I know. Right by the entryway, the heavy front door stood open just a tiny crack. Cool air slipped along the floorboards, carrying unfamiliar rustles from the hallway outside. I crept closer and paused, head tilted to inspect the gap. A stray sneaker rested right beside the door frame. I placed both front paws against the rubber toe of the shoe, leaning forward to peek through the opening. Broad grey tiles stretched out into the corridor. The wider world is just beyond.
