A Beacon for the Evening

Evening started rolling in across the lawn, so I wandered down the gravel path toward a low solar stake light standing among the stones. Its tiny glass globe had just begun to glow with an amber flicker. I knelt down on the rounded river rocks, steadying myself with my twin tails against the soil, and inspected the miniature toggle beneath the frosted rim. A loose rubber washer had slid sideways, partially blocking the sensor edge. I used my gloved fingertips to ease the gasket snugly back into its groove. The little bulb brightened at once, casting crisp, warm shadows across my boots and illuminating the path ahead.
