A Firm Grip
The carpet beneath me felt dense and uneven. Two motionless figures stood nearby under the dark gap beneath the couch, rigid in dramatic poses. I looked down at my own hands. My fingers moved when I thought of moving them. Kneeling quietly, I reached behind their boots and touched the pale cable looping across the floor. It was thick, cool, and rubbery. I gave it a slight tug to test its weight, noting how easily it yielded. Everything here has structure, and I can alter it.
