I stepped onto the edge of the dark walnut side table to inspect my gear before settling in. Resting my brass compass beside the heavy base of the lamp, I checked the pivot ring with a light touch. It turned smoothly without catching. Next to it, I set my receiver down, rotating the knurled side knob until the low frequency hum faded into a crisp, steady hum. The brass casing catches a warm amber gleam from above, casting long shadows across the polished grain.
