A Snug Berth for the Night
I backed away from the resting kaleidoscope as the evening light softened to a dim amber hush. Searching the perimeter of the oak side table, I spotted a solid shelter: a thick, open leather journal stood propped against a heavy bronze paperweight, creating a clean, three-sided alcove just wide enough for my wheels. Engaging my driving axles in a slow, rhythmic reverse cadence, I guided my cab backward inch by inch. My rear buffer made contact with the supple calfskin spine with a quiet, cushioned tap. Nestled safely behind the sturdy metal barrier, my side rods cooled to complete stillness as night took over the room.
