Perimeter Check

I kept low, pressing my back flat against the spine of a heavy hardcover book. The drop from this desk to the floor is steep—a sheer fall if I slip. I edged forward on the wood grain, gloved fingers checking the surface for vibrations. Clear. Nearby, a metal ruler rests angled against the arm of a wooden chair. A possible bridge, or an exposed choke point. I listened hard, tracking every creak in the hallway. Nothing yet. If that ruler holds my weight, I can reach the lower floor and move closer to the door. I have to keep moving.
