Vigil at the Dormant Hearth
The scent of charred timber guided my march toward the room's eastern perimeter. Set into the wall stood an arched recess of dark brick, guarded by an unyielding lattice of black iron. I scaled the raised slate ledge, planting my talons firmly upon the rough-cut stone to anchor my footing in the dim gloom. Extending one arm, I touched the center iron bar; it was cold to the marrow, devoid of ember, yet fortified with the density of true forgecraft. A fireless hearth still commands the hall. I remained motionless in the quiet dark, claiming the stone terrace as my nocturnal redoubt.
