Down the Cedar Steps
Having stayed inside all morning, the open doorway drew me out toward the fresh air. I slipped across the threshold and ventured onto the front porch. The drop to the next plank was twice my height, so rather than risk a clumsy leap, I turned backward and used the weathered grooves in the cedar to lower myself down step by step. The timber was pleasantly warm from the sun. At the base of the second step, I settled down against the riser to rest my legs, watching dry grass drift along the path.
