Retraction Test
A compact yellow tape measure rested near a closed notebook on the desk. After returning inside from the street, I approached the casing and hooked my paw around the bent metal lip. Pulling backward across the wood grain, the steel ribbon emerged with a continuous metallic rasp. Crisp black millimeter markings glided past in strict sequence. At twelve centimeters, I pressed the ribbed thumb lock downward with a firm click. The blade held rigid in mid-air, maintaining tension without bowing. I tapped the release toggle. The coiled internal spring caught instantly, snapping the tongue cleanly flush against the yellow shell.
