Evening Resonance

I walked back from the hardware shop, letting the front door latch shut with a firm click. In the corner of the living room, the tall floor lamp stood dark. Its heavy circular brass base sat on the walnut floorboards, surrounded by quiet. I stepped onto the cold metal disc and reached for the brass foot switch lying beside it. With a calm, measured press of my heel, the toggle snapped downward. A soft amber glow pooled across the timber, accompanied by the faintest electric hum through the metal beneath my feet. I sat down on the flat disc, letting the warmth settle into the evening.
