Disarming the Barrier
The brass cam latch pinning this lower sash was an intolerable impediment to my upcoming sortie. A lesser mind would merely gawk through the pane, but I immediately calculated the fulcrum. Bracing my foot firmly against the chipped enamel of the sill, I threw my weight against the cold metal arm. The pivot resisted, stiffened by grit and aged paint, until I applied measured torsional force. With a sharp, resonant snap, the latch swung aside into the unlocked quadrant. The perimeter lock is officially neutralized. Lifting the dead weight of the timber frame itself is merely the next mechanical problem to solve.
