Testing the Ground
I pushed past the flexible seal at the base of the exterior door and stepped out onto the coarse concrete porch. Having confined my movements strictly to polished indoor surfaces, my balance required testing against irregular, unyielding terrain. I selected a line of three rounded river stones embedded along the soil border. Gauging the separation between them, I initiated a forward sprint and launched across the gap, planting both feet firmly onto the narrow crest of the middle stone. The damp granite offered minimal grip, but I absorbed the momentum cleanly, stabilizing my posture against the shifting morning breeze.
