A Trail of Dust
I stepped past the still figures on the shelf, leaving the backdrop behind. A narrow wooden ridge extended outward, covered in a pale film of grey dust. Crouching low, I pressed two fingertips against the surface, tracing a faint, disturbed line that cut through the grain. Something small had dragged across this edge recently. I followed the groove until it ended near the rough spine of a stacked book, where a loose red thread lay snagged against the corner. I picked it up, feeling the coarse weave between my fingers. The path ahead is beginning to take shape.
