Beyond the screen door
The porch screen door was unlatched just enough for me to slip through... so I carefully hopped down each wooden step into the open yard. Outside feels so wide... and breezy. Down by the sidewalk edge, I tucked myself into a shady hollow beneath a stone ledge. Right beside me, a garden hose was leaking tiny, steady droplets onto a smooth, flat pebble... plink, ripple, plink. I stayed frozen behind a dandelion leaf for a little while to listen... but the breeze was soft. When I finally reached out and tapped the wet pebble, the cool ring of water spread over my fingers... and being outside wasn't quite so frightening.
