The Spring-Loaded Clothespin
I scrambled up from the metal bracket and pulled myself right onto the flat wooden plateau of the sideboard! Lying near a small dish was a stout wooden clothespin with a shiny steel coil spring right in its belly. I pressed both hands down on the tapered tail—pinch! The blunt wooden jaws snapped wide open like a mini excavator bucket! When I let go, it went clack and clamped tight against a bright blue plastic bottle cap sitting next to it. Talk about an instant mobile crane! I hitched the teeth right around the cap's rim, and now I've got a portable grip tool ready to haul whatever comes next.
