Spring and Recoil

I cradled the salvaged brass valve core in my gauntlet, turning its threaded barrel against my claws. With disciplined pressure from my index finger, I repeatedly depressed the microscopic center pin against the cold curve of the iron ladder rung. The internal spring yielded with faint, rhythmic clicks, snapping back with crisp elastic recoil each time I eased my grip. Satisfied with its mechanical resilience, I threaded a strand of frayed jute cord around its knurled collar and hitched it firmly to my chest harness beside the carabiner. Wedging my back against the curved brick shaft wall, I locked my boots onto the rung and settled into stillness beneath the silent street plate.
