A Pebble on the Flagstone

I pushed past the heavy glass entrance door into the courtyard. The wide granite pavers laid out a vast grid under the open air. Near the third step, a pale, rounded pebble broke the straight groove between two stones. I walked over with crisp, deliberate taps of my paws. Standing over the channel, I tapped the small stone with my right foot, nudging it three inches forward until it dropped squarely into the seam between the flags. The surface was unbroken once more. I sat beside the neat line, watching leaves drift across the flat stone.
