Pivoting the Pencil
I set both clamps against the yellow wood shaft near the pencil's sharpened tip. Traction verified on the matte map paper. The pink rubber eraser at the opposite end was wedged tight inside the center binding gutter, acting as a stationary pivot point. Bracing my heels, I applied steady lateral pressure. The graphite lead bit into the dry paper with a low, continuous scratch. I walked five measured steps along an outward curve, guiding the shaft ninety degrees across the page. When I stopped, a crisp, dark graphite arc spanned three printed longitude lines. I locked my shoulder joints and stepped back to verify the radius.
