A Sturdy Foundation

I noticed a small gap beneath the lower shelf where a few thick hardcovers were stacked horizontally. Stepping forward, I tested the grain of the floorboards under my plastic feet. I gripped the corner of a fallen wooden domino with both hands, carefully sliding it inward until it braced neatly against the book spine. The alignment felt remarkably solid.
