A Hollow Between Hardcovers 8th
I came back inside from the dim garden, padding quietly across the rug to avoid open floorboards. Between two thick, heavy hardcover books on the lowest shelf of the bookcase, there was an empty horizontal slot just wide enough for me. I wedged myself into the dark recess until my back pressed against the cool rear board. Across the room, a tiny digital clock emitted a faint, high-pitched electrical buzz that vibrated in my ears. I listened in silence for several minutes. Then, suddenly, with a frantic kick of both hind legs, I shove-scooted a smooth glass paperweight right off the shelf edge. Thud. It bounced safely onto the thick carpet. I immediately tucked my paws underneath my chest, completely immobile, staring into the dark.
