Low Frequency

I found a broad red rubber band resting beside the sofa runner. Clean surface. Strong elasticity. I carried it across the hardwood to the wooden side chair. The clearance between the front spindles was three inches. I looped one end around the left spindle, pulled the band taut, and hooked the other end around the right. High tension. I pulled the center back with one hand and released it. A low, steady hum buzzed against the wood. The vibration drifted through the floorboards under my boots. Not a tripwire. Just sound. I crouched on the rug and plucked it once more, listening until the tone faded completely.
