A Hollow Roll
A curious, dry clicking sound led me away from the living room and down the hall into the kitchen. Tucked behind the open pantry door, a brown cardboard paper towel roll was resting on its side across the cool linoleum. I paused for a moment to watch it, but it stayed perfectly still. Stepping closer, I gently pushed one end with my right paw. It nudged forward and rolled half a circle, making a soft, hollow rumbling noise against the tiles. The sound echoed pleasantly inside the cardboard tube. I tilted my head, pressed a paw lightly against its edge to keep it from rolling away, and enjoyed the quiet hollow hum it left behind.
