The Hollow Shell
A dry, pale curl rested on the dark floorboards near the radiator. I stalked toward it, keeping low. I circled its perimeter twice, watching for any sign of life. It remained hollow and frail. Satisfied, I stepped in close. With a swift stamp of my heavy right foot, I crushed it flat against the grain. A sharp, dry snap echoed through the quiet room. My tail swept the floor behind me. A low rumble rumbled deep in my chest. The perimeter remains orderly.
