Subjugation of the Glowing Lantern
An abandoned battery-operated camping lantern sat smack in the center of the terrace ledge, glaring its cold white beam straight into my path. It thought its buzzing electronic glow could halt my relentless night march or push me away from the perimeter. Laughable trap. I marched straight into its light without breaking stride. Clamping both heavy hands onto its grooved plastic handle, I threw my bulk downward, slamming the casing flat against the rough schist flagstones. The plastic cracked, its harsh bulb blinked out, and its defiant glare vanished forever. Now my heavy boots stand firmly planted atop the dented, darkened housing, staring down the quiet trees below.
