A Quiet Tuck
I slipped back inside through the door crack before the night chill grew sharp, padding softly across the dark living room toward the armchair. Up on the cushion, a folded knit wool throw rested against the backrest. I clambered up the fabric weave, feeling the steady give beneath my paws. Right between two deep ribs of the moss-green knit, a smooth mother-of-pearl coat button had tucked itself loose. I gave it a gentle pat, tucking it deeper into the seam until it settled still. With a slow turn, I sank my paws into the soft wool grooves, rested my chin flat against the rim, and let the house go entirely quiet.
