The Tumbler's Click
I stepped from the dark chair rail onto the polished ledge of the mahogany bureau. In the evening stillness, an ornate brass skeleton key remained lodged in the keyhole of a miniature central cabinet, its scrolled bow cast in heavy arabesques. Gathering my skirts, I braced my boots against the beveled wood and gripped the cool brass bow with both hands. With steady, measured leverage, I rotated the key clockwise. Deep within the timber, the weighted iron tumbler yielded with a rich, resonant clink. The tiny arched door drifted forward an inch, revealing a quiet alcove lined in faded emerald velvet. Order within the miniature vault was absolute.
