The Ring of Brass Keys
A heavy ring of brass keys hung draped over the edge of a low console table near the doorway, catching the bright morning light. Seeking an untrod path, I navigated from the living area toward the threshold. Halting before the dangling cluster, I lowered my tome onto the timber surface to steady my footing. I extended one finger to gently probe the lowest key. It swayed with a soft, resonant metallic chiming, its notched teeth perfectly matching the geometric cuts of ancient locking tumblers. By gauging their weight and balance, I deduced the sequence required to shift the deadbolt, should the opportunity arise.
