Iron Notch
Slate marker slipped free. Night came fast. Balcony wind blew cold. Crept past the flower pots toward the metal support frame under the outdoor air conditioning unit. High up. Heavy steel shelf bolted to the brick wall. Clambered up the rough masonry joints. Found a dense, cold corner notch where two thick iron angles cross. Chomp! Jaws snapped hard over the thick, painted metal lip. Clack! Teeth bit deep into pitted, icy steel. Hum! The unit above vibrated suddenly with a deep mechanical shudder. Froze dead still. Eyes stretched wide open into the dim evening sky. Body locked stiff. Jaws stay clamped tight to the vibrating iron rail. Not budging.
