Securing the Threshold
The front entrance offered a new perimeter to assess. I scaled the side slat of the entryway bench, stepping past the smooth leather heels of resting shoes to reach the wooden console table. Beside the front door frame, a heavy key tray held a brass swivel carabiner and a set of ridged steel keys. I inspected the interlocking ring, testing its spring tension with one mechanical thumb until it clicked smoothly into groove. Above it, the deadbolt latch was seated deep into the strike plate, locking the quiet room against the cool corridor outside. I took a low stance beside the keys, keeping quiet watch over the door.
