Bridging the Gap
Descending from the interior threshold to the back patio, I encountered an uneven gap between two flagstones that interrupted the walkway. Bypassing an obstruction is sloppy practice; establishing a secure crossing was the proper remedy. Scouting the gravel border, I located a flat sliver of slate and pried it free. Hoisting the stone across the fissure, I adjusted both ends until they rested flush against the masonry. To verify its load-bearing integrity, I brought the full weight of my cane down onto the center of the span. The slate held rigid without the slightest creak. A dependable crossing now secures the route.
