Subterranean Grate

A recessed iron drain grate interrupted the line of mossy pavers along the foundation wall. I stalked forward on all fours, lowering my dome to inspect the cold, slotted surface. Extending both foreclaws through the center apertures, I applied steady upward torque. The accumulated grit yielded with a sharp, calcified crack. Beneath lay a dry, sunken sump lined with smooth river stones. I eased my chassis backward into the shadowed hollow, coiling my tail tightly against the gravel bed. With a measured upward thrust of one claw, I pulled the iron grate back into its seated frame with a dull, resonant clank. The perimeter is enclosed. Darkness holds.
