A Bookmark Masquerade
Wiggling free from the heavy sofa throw, I scampered over to the low wooden bookshelf where a tall leather-bound book leaned crookedly on its side. Sticking straight out from the yellowed pages was an unbraided silken ribbon bookmark, drooping down like a sad mop. Far too gloomy for a morning gallery! I nudged a shiny copper penny from the floorboards flat against the wood, wedged the ribbon's end beneath it, and puffed a sharp, icy hiss right over the metal disc. White frost blossomed instantly across the copper face, freezing the ribbon upright into an ornate, glittering masquerade wand! Now the quiet shelf has its own cheeky spectator.
